In a tragic turn of events, the music world mourns the loss of Angie Stone, the renowned neo-soul singer and pioneering member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence. Stone, 63, was involved in a fatal car accident early Saturday morning in Montgomery, Alabama, after leaving a performance.
Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began with The Sequence, the first all-female rap group signed to Sugar Hill Records. Their 1979 hit “Funk You Up” became a seminal track in hip-hop history, later sampled by artists like Dr. Dre and Bruno Mars.
Transitioning to a solo career in the late 1990s, Stone released her debut album, Black Diamond, in 1999, which achieved gold status. Her 2001 single “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” remains one of her most beloved songs.
Beyond her musical accomplishments, Stone ventured into acting, appearing in films such as The Hot Chick and Ride Along.
Stone is survived by her son Michael, daughter Diamond, and two grandchildren.Â
The music community and fans worldwide are deeply saddened by her untimely passing, remembering her as a trailblazer whose soulful voice and contributions left an indelible mark on the industry.
