Dr. Letitia Scott Jackson’s provocative stage production arrives in Atlanta with director Javon Johnson, comedian Rodney Perry, actor Myles Truitt and a dynamic cast ready to take audiences behind the pulpit.
ATLANTA — The curtain rises tomorrow on one of the city’s most anticipated stage productions.
Pulpit Pimping: The Stage Play will make its Atlanta premiere Saturday, August 29, at 7 p.m. inside the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at Morehouse College.
Written and executive-produced by award-winning playwright Dr. Letitia Scott Jackson, the production uses drama, comedy and uncomfortable truths to examine what can happen when faith, money, power, relationships and personal ambition collide inside the church.
The title may raise eyebrows, but the story goes deeper than its name. Pulpit Pimping explores spiritual accountability and the complicated human lives that can exist behind respected titles and carefully maintained public images.
Jackson is also an author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of Keeping Families Connected, a nonprofit organization established in 2015 to support families and communities affected by incarceration. Through Pulpit Pimping, she brings her commitment to faith, family and accountability to the stage in a way designed to make audiences laugh, reflect and talk long after the final scene. Javon Johnson Brings the Story to Life
Acclaimed actor, playwright and filmmaker Javon Johnson directs the Atlanta production.
Johnson’s screen credits include Tyler Perry’s The Oval, American Soul, The Hate U Give, Barbershop and The Lincoln Lawyer. He is also the creator of the successful gospel musical Sanctified and founder of the Javon Johnson Actors Workshop.
His experience in television, film and live theater places the production under the direction of someone who understands how to balance strong performances, comedy and serious subject matter.
Rodney Perry Steps Into the Pulpit
Comedian, actor, radio personality and television host Rodney Perry will make a special celebrity guest appearance as Deacon Noah Good.
Known for his energetic comedy and unmistakable personality, Perry adds another layer of humor to a story that is equally willing to confront difficult questions about church leadership.
Leading the principal cast is award-winning actor Jarric Tucker as the controversial Pastor Leon LoeDown. Danielle Jackson portrays First Lady Linda LoeDown, a woman attempting to hold onto her faith, her family and the truth as the world around her begins to shift.
The Atlanta production also includes Tamika Patton, Kasey Jones, Randall Floyd, Ja’Niya Scott Jackson and Violet Kinchen Austin, who have been featured in recent cast and production promotions surrounding Saturday’s premiere. Official Atlanta production announcement
Myles Truitt Joins the Atlanta Experience
Actor Myles Truitt is also scheduled to be part of the Atlanta experience.
Truitt first captured national attention with his starring role in the science-fiction film Kin and has since appeared in Queen Sugar, Black Mafia Family, Stranger Things and Black Lightning. He is the son of cast member Danielle Jackson and has been featured alongside Jackson, Johnson and the production in promotional appearances leading into the Atlanta premiere.
Audiences can expect additional special guests, members of Atlanta’s entertainment community and media personalities on site as the production makes its Morehouse College debut.
Upscale Magazine is supporting the Atlanta premiere as a proud media sponsor, adding one of Black culture’s most recognized lifestyle publications to the evening.
A Story Atlanta Will Understand
Atlanta sits at the intersection of Black faith, culture, entertainment and influence, making the city an especially fitting destination for Pulpit Pimping.
The production does not ask audiences to abandon the church. It asks them to look closely at the people entrusted to lead it—and to consider the difference between serving a congregation and using the pulpit for personal gain.
For Jackson, the purpose is to create a conversation while still delivering an entertaining night at the theater.
Tomorrow night, Atlanta gets its opportunity to join that conversation.
