Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly was reportedly rushed to a North Carolina hospital after collapsing in his prison cell, following what his legal team has described as a near-fatal overdose and a medical emergency involving multiple blood clots.
According to court documents filed by his attorney, Beau Brindley, the incident occurred at FCI Butner, a federal correctional institution where Kelly is serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking and racketeering charges. The filings allege that prison staff administered an excessive dose of medication meant to treat his anxiety and insomnia. The dosage, reportedly captured on prison surveillance video, was said to be far above the prescribed amount and could have been lethal.
On the morning of June 13, Kelly allegedly became dizzy, saw black spots, and eventually lost consciousness in his cell. The singer reportedly crawled to the cell door before collapsing. He was later transported to Duke University Hospital, where doctors determined the overdose had serious implications. Medical staff also discovered blood clots in both his lungs and legs—conditions that typically require urgent surgical intervention.
Despite the severity of his condition, Kelly’s lawyers claim he was discharged after two days against medical advice and returned to solitary confinement. Notably, his request for surgery to address the blood clots was allegedly denied by prison officials. His legal team has since filed an emergency motion for release to home confinement, arguing that the combination of medical neglect, unsafe conditions, and alleged threats to his life—including a potential murder-for-hire plot—justify immediate removal from federal custody.
“This is not just medical negligence. This is cruel and unusual punishment,” Brindley stated in filings, further alleging that Kelly had been placed in solitary confinement just days prior for his own safety due to threats within the prison.
Prosecutors, however, have pushed back, describing the claims as part of a longstanding pattern of manipulative behavior by the singer. They argue that the court lacks jurisdiction to intervene in his placement and have asked for the motion to be dismissed.
A hearing is scheduled for June 20, where a judge will review the evidence and determine whether R. Kelly’s health and safety concerns merit a transfer to home confinement.
This latest chapter in the R. Kelly saga has reignited national conversations around inmate healthcare, prison conditions, and the treatment of high-profile inmates. As legal teams prepare for what could be a pivotal court decision, the world watches closely—once again—to see what’s next for a once-celebrated artist now engulfed in scandal and legal turmoil.
