Tyler Perry has another Netflix hit on his hands.
Season 3 of “Beauty in Black” debuted with 13 million views, landing at No. 2 on Netflix’s English-language television chart and delivering the biggest opening week in the series’ history.
The new season premiered August 27 and quickly brought viewers back into the complicated world of the Bellarie family and their powerful hair-care empire.
At the center of the story is Kimmie, played by Taylor Polidore Williams, whose evolution from a woman simply trying to survive into one of the most powerful players in the Bellarie family has become one of the show’s biggest draws.
Season 3 finds Kimmie navigating that newfound power while forming an uneasy alliance with Mallory, played by Crystle Stewart. With arrests, betrayals, family secrets and a fight for control of the Bellarie empire surrounding them, the two women find themselves playing a very different game than when audiences first met them.
And viewers are clearly watching.
According to Netflix, Season 3 accumulated 81.4 million hours watched during its debut week, translating to approximately 13 million views.
That makes this season the strongest debut “Beauty in Black” has had since the series premiered.
The Bellaries Aren’t Going Anywhere
Fans also don’t have to wonder whether Season 3 will be the end of the story.
Netflix has already renewed “Beauty in Black” for a fourth season.
The renewal was announced before Season 3 premiered, signaling the streamer’s continued confidence in the series and its audience.
The numbers help explain why.
Season 1 spent seven weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and reached No. 1 in 28 countries. Season 2 spent six weeks in the Global Top 10 and reached No. 1 in 17 countries.
Now Season 3 has opened with the show’s biggest debut yet.
Another Win for Tyler Perry
The success also continues Tyler Perry’s expansion into streaming.
“Beauty in Black” is Perry’s first Netflix original series and is part of his broader relationship with the streaming platform.
Written, directed and produced by Perry, the drama stars Taylor Polidore Williams, Crystle Stewart, Amber Reign Smith, Ricco Ross, Debbi Morgan, Richard Lawson, Charles Malik Whitfield and an ensemble cast.
But beyond the drama playing out on screen, the numbers tell another story.
Millions of viewers are showing up for a series centered around Black characters, Black women, beauty, business, power and family — and they’re showing up globally.
For a show that once appeared headed toward its final season, “Beauty in Black” is proving there may be plenty more story left to tell.
Season 3 of “Beauty in Black” is streaming now on Netflix.
